Virgil H. Hamilton, Jr. 96, of Bridgeport, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
Virgil was born on November 4, 1929, in Grafton, WV, the eldest of the late Virgil H. Hamilton, Sr. and Eva Lucille Wittman Hamilton.
After graduating from Grafton High School in 1948, Virgil attended West Virginia Business College and evening classes at Fairmont State. He paused his education to proudly serve in the United States Air Force during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954 as a radio operator in Europe. After his service, he returned home and to his education where he met the love of his life, June. They enjoyed 69 years of marriage before she preceded him in death in March 2026.
Virgil retired after 35 years of service as an accountant from CNG Corporation. After his retirement from CNG, he began working at Burnside Funeral Home as an attendant until the age of 90. He was a long-time member of Simpson Creek Baptist Church having served as a deacon, trustee, and a member of various committees.
Virgil was an extremely kind and gentle man who was friendly to everyone he met. He loved watching sports, especially West Virginia University athletics. He was a Mountaineer Football season ticket holder for 30 years, attending many of the games with his grandsons.
Virgil is survived by three children, Ralph (Gwen) Hamilton of Cross Lanes, WV; Walter (Lisa) Hamilton of Mandeville, LA; and Mary (Jake) Frederick of Bridgeport; grandchildren, Jana (ArLand) Hamilton; Sam (Eva) Beto; Devin (Zach) Angin; JR (Erica) Hamilton; Jessica (Robbie) Nutter; and John Paul Frederick; as well as 9 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Katherine Lambert and Barbara L. “Bobby-Lou” Davis; and brother Wesley “Sonny” Hamilton.
In addition to his wife, June, Virgil was preceded in death by his sister Pauline Hamilton and great-grandson, Zachariah Hamilton.
Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Sunday, from 3 – 6 p.m., where services will be held at 12 Noon on Monday, August 31, 2026, with Dr. Sean Wegener presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery, where Military Funeral Honors will be accorded by the Harrison County Honor Guard.
