Joan Hawkins Slamick, 80, of Bridgeport, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at United Hospital Center. She was born in Charleston, WV, on January 8, 1946, a daughter of the late Frank R. Hawkins and Nelda Brand Hawkins.
She was the beloved wife and soul mate of Paul Joseph Slamick for 52 years. He preceded her in death on August 29, 2017.
She was the beloved mother of Paula Slamick Foy; Mary Slamick Hall and her husband Joe; Joseph Slamick; and Jeremy Slamick. She was the beloved grandmother of Bailey Foy and his wife Isabella; Sydney Foy; Koltin Smith; and Brianna Slamick. She also has two brothers, William Nailler and Jody Nailler.
She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Duane Foy, and her biological mother, Anna Hall Smith.
Joan was a 1964 graduate of St. Peters High School and attended Shepherd University. She had many interesting jobs during her working years, including Department of Navy and the Social Security Administration. Joan felt her most important job was being a mother and caregiver. She was a selfless, loving caregiver for elderly family members and friends.
She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, was an avid movie lover and player of Yahtzee, Scrabble, PacMan, and was an avid reader, with Stephen King being her favorite author. She also loved phone marathons with good conversations. She was considered very sweet with a great sense of humor that everyone adored. She loved viewing the wildlife in her backyard. She will be missed by her beloved pets, Chessie (dog); Cuddles (cat) and Little Baby Bird.
The family would also like to thank WVU Medicine Hospice and her nurse Kiara for their care and compassion.
Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, from 2 -6 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 2026, where Catholic Burial Rites will be held at 6 p.m. with Father Walt Jagela presiding. After the service, Joan will be cremated.
