Joseph “Jay” Eugene Leuliette, a.k.a. “Jaybird” a.k.a “Hoss” passed away at 69 years of age on Friday, May 29th, 2026.
He was loved as a father, papaw, uncle, brother, hunting buddy, dog babysitter, and friend. He tragically died while rescuing three blind orphans and a case of miller lite from a burning building. (At least that’s what I heard. You know Jay and his stories.)
A graduate of Bridgeport High School, Jay worked as a welder at Quality Hydraulics and aircraft mechanic at Bombardier. He enjoyed his time outdoors as a life-long hunter and fisherman.
Jay was preceded in death by -his parents- Donald Delbert Leuliette and Betty Gene Leuliette
Jay leaves behind: -children- Joey, Beth, Josh and Jayden -grandchildren- Genevieve, Jonah, and Opie; -his sister and family- Mary Sue Eye and Charley Eye.
Jay’s legacy of laughter, loyalty, friendship, and love will be continued on by those who loved him. He did not leave any parting words. However, if he had, I am sure he would tell all that travel down Water St. or Ferris Ave. the same words he often reiterated in life: “Slow down..”
The family would like to express a heartfelt “thank you” to Jay’s neighbors for the assistance and kind words following Jay’s death.
A Gathering of Family & Friends will be held at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave Bridgeport, from 5 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday June 17, 2026, where a Celebration of Jay’s Life will be held at 7 p.m.
